How can I make character people will want to be like?

Everybody likes a hero. Heroes need villains. Villains do not need to be people. They can be the rocks too high to climb, too tough to get through. They can be the wind, the sea, the social entities created by man to imprison man. Create these villains instead. And make the hero see them for what they are. And make him/her kick their asses.
