Why can one be shy in some situations and very outgoing in others?

Psychologically speaking... In school, with fellow nerds, I'm outgoing, loud, aggressive, and usually the leader of anything. However, in camp, where I have no friends, I tend to blend in the background, painfully shy. I'm sure this is the case with many...but why?
