Do you think it makes any difference whether your child goes to public or private school?

We aren't sure if it's worth spending the money to send our 2 young children to a Montessori or Waldorf school...yes, we believe in giving them the best possible education, but does it REALLY make a difference? What are your thoughts (parents or "products" of public and private education are welcome!) Thanks everyone...
