I want to go to Rutgers - New Brunswick..?

my entire life my mother has been drilling me saying community college is for bums! Throughout my entire high school experience i have not performed well enough to go straight into Rutgers New Brunswick. I did get accepted into Waldorf University, a school in Iowa; but rutgers is where i really want to be. Should i go to community college then transfer or go to Waldorf for two years and transfer?
